About Me:
I live with my partner and two children ๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ in Edinburgh ๐ฐ ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ. At work I research quantum computers and mathematics ๐ป๐ฅผ. In my free time I love to do karate ๐ฅ, play the piano ๐น, read novels ๐, watch tv ๐บ, and play with my kids ๐ช .

I was born in the Netherlands ๐ณ๐ฑ. I met my partner in high school ๐ซ, and we’ve been together for over 25 years since. We have two children: Tristan is 13, and Nora is 10 โฝ. I spent two years in the US ๐บ๐ธ, and have been in the UK ๐ฌ๐ง for the last 15 years. Edinburgh is home. I used to play volleyball ๐ in school, but switched to karate ๐ฅ in university; now I teach the karate classes.

My Work:
Quantum computers use the laws of physics to do calculations very quickly. ๐งฎ It’s very cool, but nobody really knows how to tell them what to do ๐คฏ — that’s what I am trying to find out!

Normal computers have bits, that can be 0 or 1. Quantum computers have quantum bits, that behave much more weirdly. They can take on more values than just 0 and 1. And when you have two of them, they can sync up ๐๐บ. Nobody really knows why, but it’s very useful: you can use these tricks to answer some questions much more quickly than any normal computer can. ๐๐ With a quantum computer, you can solve some problems in an hour that a normal computer couldn’t solve in a billion years! โฐ

My Typical Day:
I wake up โฐ, make the kids’ lunch, and have breakfast (muesli and tea). ๐ฅฃ๐ต I drop Nora off at school ๐ซ and get to workย at 9am. Lots of exciting science happens!ย Lunch is around 1pm.ย ๐ฅ More exciting science happens! I usually go home around 5pm, either to do karate ๐ฅ myself or take the children to their sports โฝ and activities. I watch some tv ๐บ, and go to sleep around 11pm. ๐ด

In the office, my time is divided roughly over 4 things:
- I teach courses, preparing lectures, talking to students, mark coursework and exams. ๐งโ๐ซ
- I do research and read literature. Sometimes this involves calculating things myself, but more often it means talking to people and trying out ideas. ๐ก
- I supervise others’ research. This means talking to them about what they’ve done, where they’re stuck, and maybe get ideas for how to get unstuck, how to work around the problem, or whether the problem is even worth it. ๐ค
- I help to keep the university working smoothly. I organise courses, design the curriculum, interview new students, help in advertising and open days, make sure all the paperwork and finances are in order. ๐จโ๐ผ
For all of this I have lots of help! I love working together with people.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I think I’d hire somebody (a secondary school student!) to help me build a nice interactive website or app to help people understand the research I do.
-
Education:
I went to primary school and secondary school in the Netherlands.
-
Qualifications:
The system in the Netherlands is different, but I did something roughly equivalent to GCSE in Dutch, English, Latin, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, and Economics.
-
Work History:
As a teenager I picked beans and had a paper round. Later I built websites for a real estate company. After graduating from university in the Netherlands with a PhD, I worked at the University of Oxford, Caltech, and now the University of Edinburgh.
