About Me:
Mathematician by day and long-distance runner by night (actually, in the weekend mostly).

I’m from Belgium, studied in Germany, and have been living in the UK for about 5 years.
I am a mathematician, both in spirit and by education, but the bits of maths I like most are where it connects to physics, engineering and computer science.
I love running and am happy to live in a country where it is a popular sport. My bucket list events are the London Marathon and the Great North Run, but my favourite place to run is in the Lake District.
I volunteer as a newsletter editor for my local running club. To make this job easier I wrote a python script that collects all parkrun results of our club members automatically. I find it very satisfying when my professional skills come in useful in everyday life like this.

My Work:
I teach mathematics at university and do research on the connections between mathematics, physics, and scientific computing.

My research is about the abstract geometry behind many of the equations used in physics. Understanding this geometry can help us to develop new theories in physics. It also allows us to do more accurate computations to predict the behaviour of many real-life systems, ranging from water waves to the orbits of planets.
I also like to talk about the mathematics behind familiar phenomena. Ask me about the mathematics and physics of rainbows, the geometry of athletics tracks, or why we can predict the orbit of a comet hundreds of years in advance, but not the weather two weeks from now.
-
My Typical Day:
Working approximately 9-5. Some days I teach lectures or tutorials and meet with project students. Some days I focus on my research.

Research is a mix of doing computations by myself, discussing with colleagues while scribbling on a blackboard, and attending (or sometimes presenting) seminar talks.
Teaching at university typically involves lectures, where I do most of the talking and explain the theory to the students, and tutorials, where I guide student through exercises. I also supervise students doing a final year project as well as a PhD student.

What I'd do with the prize money:
Get a collection of weird objects of mathematical significance or with unexpected physical behaviour to include in my lectures and workshops: a tippe top, a rattleback, a gömböc, …
-
Education:
I went to school in Belgium and did my undergraduate there as well. Then I moved to Berlin to do a Master’s and a PhD.
-
Qualifications:
The Belgian secondary school system is quite different from the UK one. We don’t have GCSEs and A levels, but only pick a general area to focus on. My area of focus was mathematics and sciences.
BSc in Mathematics with minor in Physics
MSc in Mathematics
PhD in Mathematical Physics
-
Work History:
As a student I had various summer jobs, ranging from factory work to tutoring maths.
During my PhD I was employed at TU Berlin as a research assistant
After that I spend two years at the University of Leeds as a postdoctoral researcher.
Then I moved to Loughborough University, first also as a postdoctoral researcher on a fixed-time contract. Now I am a research fellow and lecturer, with an open-ended contract.
-
Current Job:
EPSRC Research Fellow and Lecturer
EPSRC is the government body that fund research in engineering and physical sciences. Because I have a fellowship from them, I can spend more of my time on research, compared to teaching and other departmental duties.
“Lecturer” is the first level of permanent academic position. Later in my career I hope to be promoted first to “Senior Lecturer”, then to “Reader”, and eventually to “Professor”.
