About Me:
I live with my family, in Stone Staffordshire, located between Stafford and Stoke.
I am a Cyber Security Technical Consultant by day but also an active STEM Ambassador and run my own Code Club at a middle school my own daughters used to attend.
I try to keep fit and enjoy running and going to the gym.
-
My Work:
My work is interesting and varied and I get to work with some of the largest, and most recognisable names in the world, Primark, Costa Coffee, HSBC, delivering secure solutions to protect them from vulnerabilities and cyber attack.
I am a Fellow in our Distinguished Engineer Scheme, the highest technical accolade you can obtain in the organisation.
Externally, I have also worked with the Department for Education on the development of the Digital T-Levels, including the new Cyber T-Level which went live in September 2023.
-
My Typical Day:
As I spend a lot of time working from home following covid, my typical day starts at around 6.30. I then break at around 8am to do the school run, before settling down involving:
- Scheduled calls and meetings with customers, these can be on Teams (sound and video depending on the customer, or in person at either customer or Fujitsu sites
- Creating design documentation using the following:
- Microsoft Visio to create visual representations of a customers environment
- Microsoft Word to create the design documentation
- Microsoft PowerPoint to present the solution to the customer
- Answering emails and calls
- Managing people as I look after the Cyber Graduates and Apprentice
At lunchtime I take my Cockerpoo (Teddy) for a walk and then work until 3pm when I do the school run again. I usually finish my work day around 5.30pm.

What I'd do with the prize money:
If I won the £500 prize money, I would invest it in some Kitronic handheld programmable consoles for my Code Club. This would give the kids another insight into programming and games creation.
-
Education:
I went to Oakhill High School from 1983 to 1987. This school doesn’t exist any more and merged with Thistly Hough High School in 1988.
-
Qualifications:
I didn’t do particularly well at school and left with one O’ level in Home Economics, so was basically only good at cooking.
After a few years I decided to go back to night school at Stoke-on-Trent College to get some qualifications and did 6 GCSE’s and 2 A’ Levels in 3 years before going to Staffordshire University as a mature student in 1995 studying Business Information Technology. I left with a 2:1 in 1999.
During my time in employment, I have passed a raft of technical certifications from organisations like Microsoft, Amazon, Symantec and am currently learning about CrowdStrike.
-
Work History:
When I left school I went to work at the Spode pottery factory from 1987 to 1995 making eveything from cups, saucers, plates, teapots, etc. If it was made of clay, we created it!! I was cycling from here to college 3 nights a week whilst doing my exams.
During my time at University, I worked at Next in the menswear department and became the weekend Mens Floor Manager during my time there.
In my year in employment as part of my university course in 1998, I worked at British Nuclear Fuels supporting their IT infrastructure.
After completing my degree I worked at Atos Origin in their Enterprise Management Team from 1999 to 2005.
-
Current Job:
Since 2005 I have worked for Fujitsu. I started in their Enterprise Management team designing, building and supporting infrastructure for customers.
In 2010 I moved into the newly created Enterprise Cyber Security business and have been there ever since. I have been promoted 3 times during my time here, the last one into my current role of Lead Technical Cyber Consultant.
In my management role, I support our junior talent in their development and progression.
