Doing your own projects at home is a really good idea to boost your experiences. Also, internships and spring weeks are a great way to see technology in the real world!
Universities are great ways to experience software and technology (I have a degree in Computer Science), but aren’t necessarily a complete picture. Last year, I was astonished at how few universities taught about the Mainframe enterprise computing platform and operating system. There are a few, and they have very active Mainframe Societies. The IBM Z Xplore initiative is a fun way to get introduced the the singular most important computing platform we all depend upon! https://ibmzxplore.influitive.com/
Also, do side-projects to learn different skills, and mark their progress on GitHub!
