The tills and payment systems are all computers, and larger shops have databases of their customers so they can send them newsletters, offers and information about new products etc. Some of the customer relations software is very sophisticated and uses machine learning / AI to personalise the communications they send.
Yes, the shops themselves will have computers to handle payments, security systems (CCTV) and logging when employees start/finish their shifts. Big companies behind the shops will have lots of opportunities for careers in computing as they will be combining all the data from the individual shops plus all their supplier and customer data.
Some small shops won’t have a computer specialist employed full time, they might just hire them to install the computer systems then provide maintenance and support.
