One of the nice things about working in a university is that if there is any field I want to know more about, I can study it now! I work across lots of different areas of medicine and vet medicine, and so I often need to study very specific areas to understand the background of a research project.
When I was in Uni (a long time ago), I did a bit of research on Computer Science and Music. I don’t use that knowledge at all now. Maybe in a different universe I would have continued it…
I study Scientific Computing, which is all about using computers and maths to solve real-world science and engineering problems. For example, I use it to model how clean energy sources like nuclear fusion or heat pumps work, helping to make them more efficient.
Would I change it? Honestly, no I wouldn’t. It’s a perfect mix of problem-solving, creativity, and real impact. I get to work on cutting-edge technology and help build a better, greener future. That’s something I’m proud of.
I studied Financial Computing at University. I really enjoyed it as it mixed Computer Science with Maths and Economics and we always developed something with a purposes.
Having said that times have changed and I would strongly consider an apprenticeship instead if I was getting into IT nowadays.
