For a lot of computer science jobs, the best skills are “soft skills” – for example, talking to people, managing your work and time, presenting, understanding the task and problem – these are really invaluable!

As a computer science researcher, there’s a lot of important skills like writing and presenting, organising your work and planning with other people. But the most important researcher skill in my opinion is having resilience so that you don’t give up when things go wrong, or when you’re not sure what the next thing you need to do to solve your research question is.

I would say communication is something you need to excel at. You could be the most technical person who is an amazing coder, cybersecurity expert and amazing at computing but if you can’t explain to someone who isn’t in computing why they need to stay cyber safe and not put a fridge magnet on hard drive, you will struggle in your career. If you are able to explain things in a way that it can be understood by anyone, in any team, then you are set to go!
