Depends on the Data Centre I go to.
Some require checks as simple as just looking at your passport others will do a full background check. It depends on the sensitivity of the information that is housed in the Data Centre.
There was one site where we couldn’t take our own laptops or phones even into the offices and we had to work on laptops they handed us and none of the work was even able to leave the site. Some sites you will have armed escorts.
Security varies for site to site.

There are people I have worked with who have the need for this depending on the work/client.

The level people have does vary a lot depending on the needed clearance. There are levels that you need to have just to go into certain rooms.
Typically if someone has clearance they are not allowed to tell you since that itself is a risk.
      I do not.
