About Me:
I’m studying to get my PhD in computer science at Bath University so that I can become a qualified scientist, because I’ve always thought scientists were really cool! I love learning, but I also love playing computer games, having coffee with my friends, and playing my bass guitar!

I love spending time with friends and family: my niece and nephew are very important to me! But I also like having time to myself to relax and recharge, so I like quiet evenings in more than going out every night. I live in Bath right now, but I’d quite like to move somewhere quiet like the village I grew up in one day.
In my free time, I like to play video games and board games, read, and play the bass guitar. I also like to cook and try out new recipes. Although I’m not very good at art, I enjoy doing it as a hobby. I also like learning new things and meeting new people, so I like to attend courses for things that interest me, like art and languages. I’m a big fan of anime and manga, and I enjoy watching and reading them in my spare time.
One day, I’d like to visit Japan and experience its culture and food. I like traveling to all sorts of new places and trying new things though. I’m not very sporty, but I enjoy doing martial arts and bouldering, and I’d like to try some other sports like ice skating and volleyball.
When I was younger, I wanted to be a secret agent, then the prime minister, and later a lawyer. But as I got older, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I even spent a while thinking I’d like to be a chef! Eventually I decided that I wanted to be a scientist though, and luckily, I still do!
My favourite animal is foxes, but they don’t make very good pets unfortunately. If I did have a pet, I’d be happy with a dog, a cat, or even rats! I wouldn’t want a pet bird though, because I used to have to sleep with noisy budgies in my bedroom, and it was not very pleasant!

My Work:
I work on teaching computers the difference between right and wrong, so that they can make good decisions.

I work with artificial intelligence, or AI for short. AI is like a computer brain that can make decisions on its own. I’m trying to figure out how to teach AI to care about the same things we do, like being kind to each other and being fair. To do this, I use ideas from psychology, which is the study of how people think and feel. Psychology helps us understand what’s important to people, which we call values. I take these ideas about values and use mathematics to build computer programs that can understand and talk about them in a way that’s similar to how humans experience and express them.
For example, imagine an AI that suggests videos for you to watch. You might not want the AI to suggest scary videos if you don’t like them, because they might upset you. But other people might enjoy scary videos, so they would want the AI to suggest those. A responsible AI would understand that different people have different preferences and try to suggest videos that are right for each person.
My goal is to make AI that can behave responsibly and make decisions that are good for everyone. This is important because AI is becoming a bigger part of our lives, and we want to make sure it’s helping us in positive ways, rather than causing problems. For instance, a responsible AI wouldn’t try to get you to watch videos when you’re trying to sleep or do your homework. It would understand that you have other things you need to do, and not try to distract you from those. By teaching AI to care about human values and behave responsibly, we can create technology that helps us live better lives and makes the world a better place.

My Typical Day:
I head into the university about 10 in the morning, where I will spend my time talking to my supervisor, reading research ideas from other scientists, and experimenting with computer code to try and implement those ideas mixed with my own. When I’m not doing that, I’ll be writing about what I’ve done so that I can share it around.

I usually start working about 10 am, because it takes a long time for my brain to switch on in the morning! I discuss my work with my supervisor over a coffee, then spend time looking at research ideas that other scientists have published, or experiment with computer code to try and put those ideas into action. Sometimes this means having long conversations with an AI to see if it understands what I’m telling it, which I do by asking it lots of questions and studying what it says back. When I’m done, I have to write the results up so that I can share them with other scientists and get their thoughts. Sometimes I don’t stop thinking until quite late in the evening, but I still make time to enjoy my hobbies and look after myself.

Education:
I went to primary school in Rolvenden, Kent, and then moved to Swindon when I was 10. I went to Greendown School (now known as Lydiard Academy) for secondary school, and then did my A levels in maths, chemistry, and psychology at Cirencester College.
I started university at the University of Bath, but decided I wanted to study maths instead. So, I finished my degree in maths at Cardiff University. After that, I went back to the University of Bath and got a master’s degree in maths. I also did another master’s degree in artificial intelligence. I have three degrees now, but I’d still like to learn more if I could!
-
Qualifications:
I took my GCSEs in maths, science, and English, sociology, Spanish and drama. After that, I did A levels in maths, chemistry, and psychology, and also studied physics, further maths, and law at a lower level.
I have a degree in Applied Mathematics, and I also have two Master’s degrees – one in Applied Mathematics and one in Artificial Intelligence.
In addition to my main qualifications, I’ve gained some extra certificates in Cloud Computing and Artificial Intelligence. I’m currently studying German and plan to take a language exam soon.
-
Work History:
My first job was washing dishes in a cafe, but I didn’t last long – only three days! On the bright side, I discovered my favourite band while working there.
After university, I tried to become an actuary, which is someone who is an expert in insurance, but it wasn’t for me. I worked for Lloyds Banking Group for four years, then decided to go back to studying maths. I was inspired by my friends who were doing PhDs, and I wanted to do one too.
I didn’t get into a PhD program right away, but I didn’t give up. Instead, I worked for Raytheon UK, a company that makes technology for the military, where I learned new skills and got advice on how to apply for PhDs. A year later, I was accepted into a PhD program, and I was thrilled!
-
Current Job:
I’m currently studying for a PhD in computer science at the University of Bath. I also help teach and support students, which helps me learn and understand the subject better. I enjoy helping others because I’ve had a lot of help myself, and I want to give back and support people who want to build their careers and make a difference.

Employer:
I work at the University of Bath, a well-known university that specializes in science and technology. My research is paid for by the government, using money from taxpayers. This means I feel responsible to make sure my work helps people in the UK, and that I use the money wisely.

My Interview
-
What did you want to be after you left school?
When I first left school, I wasn't sure if I wanted to work for a bank or be a computer programmer. I tried the bank, and it was very boring, so I went back to school! The second time I left school, I was sure I wanted to be a scientist, and now that's what I'm doing.
Were you ever in trouble at school?
Yes! I was very quick to argue if people didn't agree with me, so that led to a lot of shouting matches that I'd get told off for. Now I know I don't need to shout to get my point across.
If you weren't doing this job, what would you choose instead?
If I couldn't be a scientist and had to start over, I wouldn't mind a life at sea. I find the ocean very relaxing, but it also sounds very adventurous!
Who is your favourite singer or band?
Florence + The Machine - I find her music very moving and fit many moods.
What's your favourite food?
I don't have a favourite, because I love cooking and all the food that goes with it!
If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!
My wishes for myself are to meet a nice guy who I can start a family with, have a really lovely home that I can look after, and get to be a voice actor in a video game!
Tell us a joke.
Why is six afraid of seven? Because seven eight nine!
How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Thoughtful, Fun-loving, Hard-working
