Jobs are always changing around emerging technologies. Once, people would be employed to go around and light all the candles in streetlights, now they just come on automatically.

Now robot arms do some of the things people used to do in factory assembly lines, computers answer maths problems in seconds that would have taken humans hours and AI can talk to customers almost as well as human representatives.

This does mean some businesses can save money by hiring less of those types of employees. But it also makes new jobs in other areas. There are jobs that exist now that never did when I was young, like professional computer game player.

I think even in the far future when people don’t have to do as much work to keep things running because computers do most of it for us, people will still find thing to do because humans like making things better. Maybe there will be lots more scientists, artists and philosophers – things that it would be really hard for a computer to be able to do.

New technology always changes jobs. Some jobs will be replaced and some new ones will be created that didn’t exist before. The one thing that is clear is that more and more organisations rely on their IT like never before so it’s becoming more rather than less important. As such, there will always be jobs in this area.

AI is just the latest bit of technology and right now it’s not intelligent, but it can help do a few things that it’s been trained to. I’m sure it will continue to become better but I wouldn’t worry too much about it right now. And remember, you still need people to build and train these AI systems… we’re not going to be replaced any time soon. But how we do our jobs is certainly going to change.

Absolutely! But that has always been the case. I think other people have answered this quite well already, so I’d use this space to say you shouldn’t worry about it at this stage in your life. Focus on doing and learning more about what interests you, and work with the technologies that emerge around you, rather than against them.
