Loads to unpack there, good questions! I chose Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Scientific Computing as fields of interest because I was very interested in the fundamental fields they are built on, such as Linear Algebra and Programming. I got into it from an academic side, the first ML program I ever wrote was some homework to predict stock prices. Then I went on to write some ML models in for a whole load of projects, including formula racing companies and the UK Government. Now I’m using ML and AI to write simulation models to help in clean energy research.

As for whether AI is good or bad, I think it is ultimately the responsibility of the user on what they use it for. Someone using it for homework might not be using it in the same way as a scammer does. Like at technology that isn’t essential for human survival, it is neither good nor bad. Even a hammer can be used to create or kill. As long as you’re aware of the level access you’re granting to Large Language Models like ChatGPT, and you’re careful about what personal information you share over the internet, you should be more than safe with AI. Until terminators become a real thing that is!

Personally I have no strong feelings about AI, though I would say I have a healthy suspicion of its current form and the trajectory it is heading toward. Again, I would say as long as you are comfortable with the level of access it has to your life and you are using it for good purposes, you should be ok. However, there are huge debates on what a “good purpose” is. I would argue that AI shouldn’t have access to the ability of generating artwork or realistic image-generation, mainly because of the prevalence of online disinformation but also because it makes it harder for real artists to stay within the market. But even that is up for debate.
