I am a Theoretical Physicist who uses large supercomputers to solve the
equations that describe the interactions of quarks and gluons. Perhaps
the most surprsing aspect of this theory is that individual quarks
are not found in experiments, but only certain combinations of
quarks such as the proton. In the past 10 years I have been doing calculations motivated by an
experiment, at a National Laboratory in the USA, that measured a
property of the muon (a fundamental particle that is a heavier version
of the electron.) There was a disagreement between the theory and
experiment that might have provided evidence for a new theory that
could explain dark matter. The research is done in a collaboration of
20 people in Scotland and the USA.Recently, I have started to use Quantum Computers that are based
on Quantum Mechanics that replace bits, 1 and 0s, used in classical
computers with qubits (sphere like objects.) Hopefully, when quantum
computers get big enough and more reliable, they will be faster than
exisiting classical computers. -
My Typical Day:
As a lecturer, I teach undergraduate students via a lecture or computer lab for about 5 hours a week. I meet with PhD and MSc students to discuss their projects.
