Over the years I have learnt a lot of skills from my time in my role, University and everyday life. The list could go on forever so here are some that I find important. You may be surprised to see just how many aren’t actually technical, although my role is in tech!

      1. Communication:
Getting people to understand your thoughts, reasoning and influencing them to do things e.g not plug in random USBs they find into their laptops!
      2. Networking (the human kind!) :
Learn from others in the industry, make meaningful connections and support each other. My connections have supported me to get to where I am today. Without supporters, mentors and friends I would not have my confidence.
      3. Time Management:
When working in IT this is very important. Deadlines are extreme, a lot of work needs to be done and balancing it all is a skill that you learn over time.
      4. Accountability:
If something goes wrong, own it. Find a solution, understand what went wrong, why and how to avoid it in the future. Don’t be afraid of owning it because you don’t want to get in trouble. Things happen. Unplugged a server by accident? Oops! Plug it back in, let them know about the downtime and do the right checks to make sure everything comes back online. Think about how to prevent it in future!

Some of the skills I’ve acquired:

      – Communication: you have to be able to express complicated research ideas simply
      – Diligence, because you’re self-managing most of the time.
      – Resilience, so you can push through things going wrong.
      – Creativity, so you can come up with good research questions and ways to investigate them.
